만물 곧 하나님 지으신 모든 피조물이 여자의 산고와 같은 고통 중에 휘말려 있다. 인간은 하나님 지으신 피조물이 아니라서 여기서 예외인가? 인간의 범죄로 인해 만물이 연대(連帶)되어 이렇듯이 고통 중에 있는데 이 세상 신인 악마의 거짓말과 속임수에 마취되어 천지를 분간 못하거나 멸망의 운명이 정해진 인간이나 희희낙락 이 세상 삶을 향유할 뿐으로 하나님의 진노 아래 있는 줄은 꿈에도 생각 못하니 어찌 "심한 통곡과 눈물로"(히 5:7) 간구가 나오지 않으랴.
아래 그림들이 하나님께서 이 세상을 그리고 인간을 보시는 대로의 실상이다. 아담 범죄의 결과물이다. 다른 이유는 아무것도 없다. 그래서 죽은 자로부터 산 자로의 전환을 위해서는 마땅히 거쳐야 하는 죽음의 고통으로 이 방법 외에는 가장 합리적인 수단이 없다. 이와 달리 세상, 인간을 보는 자가 하나님과 보조를 맞출 수 있겠는가. 영생만 바라보고 행복한 미래의 삶을 꿈꾸며 구름 떼처럼 몰려드는 인파를 향해 주님은 앞장 서 가시던 발걸음을 멈추시고 뒤로 돌이켜 다음 말씀으로 경고하셨다. "무릇 나를 따르는 자는 자기 목숨까지 미워하고 자기 십자가를 지고(사형장으로 향하는) 자기 모든 소유를 버려야 하고 그렇지 않고는 나 있는 데 올 수 없다." 한참 후끈 달아 오르는 열기에 찬 물을 끼얹으시는 말씀이셨다. 사람에 따라서는 청천벽력이었다. 그래서 "구원 받는 사람이 적습니까?" 등 몇 차례 반복해서 여쭈어 주님 말씀의 진의가 정녕 그러하신 줄을 최종 확인하고는 썰물처럼 빠져 나간 것이다(요 6:66). 오늘날도 마찬가지지만 단지 그렇게 정직하게 빠져 나가는 대신 인위적인 교리를 만들어 그 거짓말을 믿고는 "영생도 얻고 이세상에서 축복 받아 잘 살기도 한다더라"는 종교(기독교라는 이름 아래)가 되어 있다는 그 차이뿐이다.
말씀으로 얻는 구원이요 하나님의 아들됨인데 왜 말씀을 무시하는가(약 1:18). 어떤 말씀은 마음에 드니 믿고 어떤 말씀은 썩 마음에 들지 않으니 그냥 간단히 무시하고 버리면 되는 것인가? 그래서 구원이 불가능한 세상 종교의 하나로 "기독교"가 전락했다는 것이다. 소위 "기복(祈福)신앙"에 절어 있는 이들에게 화가 있다. 전체적인 하나님의 말씀과 뜻과는 반대 방향으로 가면서 어찌 은혜의 구원 관련 말씀만은 자기에게 적용되기를 바라는가. 무리이고 욕심이다. 이와 같이 "그리스도 십자가의 원수로 행하는"(빌 3:18)자는 "멸망"(:19)뿐이다. 소위 "기복(祈福)신앙"에 절어 있는 이들에게 화가 있다. 전체적인 하나님의 말씀과 뜻과는 반대 방향으로 가면서 어찌 은혜의 구원 관련 말씀만은 자기에게 적용되기를 바라는가. 무리이고 욕심이다. 이와 같이 "그리스도 십자가의 원수로 행하는"(빌 3:18)자는 "멸망"(:19)뿐이다. 고통 중에 있는 순간에서 삶의 향락을 구가할 수 있는가? 답해보라. 이 만물의 처절한 고통이 인간과 "함께"(together), "지금까지 계속 이어짐"(right up to the present time)을 성경은 이같이 역설한다. 무슨 할 말이 있는가.
   
아래 60개 영역본(Biblegateway) 중에 우리말 번역 "탄식"과 같은 의미의 단어는 단 하나도 없다. 여자의 산통이라고 명시하지 않은 데가 갈색 표시 부분으로서 5곳을 제외하고는 모두 하나같이 신음 중에 울부짖는 여자의 산고, 진통의 뜻이다. 빨리 우리말 성경을 손보아야 한다. "우리를 대신하신 죽음, 운운"부터 "우리를 위하신 죽음"으로 당장 고쳐야 한다.

And it is plain, too, that we who have a foretaste of the Spirit are in a state of painful tension, while we wait for that redemption of our bodies which will mean that at last we have realised our full sonship in him. We were saved by this hope, but in our moments of impatience let us remember that hope always means waiting for something that we haven’t yet got. But if we hope for something we cannot see, then we must settle down to wait for it in patience.

All around us we observe a pregnant creation. The difficult times of pain throughout the world are simply birth pangs. But it’s not only around us; it’s within us. The Spirit of God is arousing us within. We’re also feeling the birth pangs. These sterile and barren bodies of ours are yearning for full deliverance. That is why waiting does not diminish us, any more than waiting diminishes a pregnant mother. We are enlarged in the waiting. We, of course, don’t see what is enlarging us. But the longer we wait, the larger we become, and the more joyful our expectancy.
